The Veloway was officially opened by Cadel Evans of Tour De France Fame.
The wait is over! The new Dixon Veloway is now open for bike riders! This is part of the 14 kilometres of walking and cycling paths delivered by the West Gate Tunnel Project.
The Dixon Veloway honours Iris Dixon, née Bent (1931–2022), one of Australia’s most successful female cyclists. Iris began her racing career in 1945 and won 16 Australian National Titles, 25 Victorian State Titles, three national Champion of Champions titles, and all five national championships in 1951.
But Iris wasn’t only defined by trophies – she simply loved to ride. She learned to ride at the age of four on a hand-made bike built by her father, George “Buzzer” Bent. As a young woman, Iris rode her bike to work at the Central Telephone Exchange in Melbourne, and she continued riding well into her eighties with the ‘Golden Oldies’ at the Preston Velodrome. Her lifelong dedication to riding makes this tribute especially meaningful.
The bright green Dixon Veloway runs from Shepherd Bridge in Footscray to Moonee Ponds Creek near Docklands, suspended between the new elevated roadway along Footscray Road. It bypasses six busy intersections, giving bike riders a safe, dedicated express off-road route to and from the CBD.
The two-lane cycling super-highway is four metres wide and is equipped with lighting, CCTV, alarmed exits and emergency vehicle access. It is purpose-built for cyclists only – walkers and joggers can use the on-ground Footscray Road walking and cycling path which has been upgraded.
This is the culmination of years of planning, design and collaboration. Thank you for being part of the journey – your support and feedback is greatly appreciated.

The Federation Trail at Brooklyn is opened again after several months of being closed due to flooding.
Dynon Road walking and cycling bridge now open
A vital new link between the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail and North Melbourne, extending to Docklands and beyond.
A new walking and cycling bridge along Dynon Road is now open, making travel to the city easier and safer.
Spanning 440 metres across the rail lines near North Melbourne Station, the bridge gives pedestrians and cyclists a dedicated path separated from the busy traffic on Dynon Road.
The new path gives bike riders from the west two key routes into the city:
- one via Footscray Road, offering direct access to Docklands and central Melbourne’s broader cycling network,
- another via Dynon Road, providing a convenient link to North Melbourne, Carlton, and nearby suburbs.
The Dynon Road walking and cycling bridge provides a more direct safer route for people to walk and ride safely from North Melbourne to the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail and connects with the recently opened Footscray Road walking and cycling bridge.

If you have not already heard, the Department of Transport is proposing to ban e-bikes from Metro Trains and V/Line services from September, 2025.
Please respond to a consultation by Engage Victoria, see the link below, and Have Your Say. Even if you do not ride an e-bike presently.
This proposal is ill conceived as there are many e-bike owners that have purchased high end quality e-bikes, from reputable Dealers, which meet Australian standards.
E-bikes and trains extend travel for commuters and recreational riders around Melbourne and Regional Victoria.
All e-bikes users choosing to use Trains are being penalised by this proposal. The real problem is the illegally modified bikes, batteries and charging systems that are causing issues.
A blanket ban is Unjust and is a knee jerk reaction to a problem created by Legislators, and always looking for a blanket solution to a complex issue.
Cleanup the sale and use of non-compliant e-bikes and then see if there is a problem before banning e-bikes from trains. Hundreds of e-bikes are carried on trains weekly without any issues.
We are dismayed at the lack of foresight in this proposal. Riders that use this mode of e-bike / train combination usually live in the outer suburbs like ourselves and choose not to use cars.
Why should we be punished because of unscrupulous importers and slack enforcement of illegal e-motor bikes.
Train travel allows us to extend our recreational rides. We enjoy the exercise and friendship of group riding, with better health outcomes for all.
Losing the ability to use trains will severely Stifle our riding scope.
We travel to regional locations to widen our horizons and inject money into the local economy.
This is bureaucratic overreach, we want a more workable outcome.
More consultation is required on this complex issue.

Ensuring eBike Safety: Certification & Standards
It was announced 20/02/2025 that the Federal Government through the Active Transport Fund is to jointly fund, with Hobsons Bay City Council, the building of Stages 4 & 5 of the Kororoit Creek Trail. From Barnes Road Nth Altona to Cherry Lake Altona and Bay Trail.
The Honourable Tim Watts MP, Member for Gellibrand, was instrumental in getting this funding that will link Hobsons Bay via the Kororoit Creek shared trail along Toyota Way to Werribee, to Caroline Springs and to Melbourne’s CBD via the West Gate Tunnel Velaway and to the entire Melbourne metropolitan shared trail network.
Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek (FOLKC) have been advocating for this link for 25 years and thanks also to our State Government through Melissa Horne MP, Hobsons Bay City Council, Toyota Australia, West Gate Tunnel Project, Greening the West and now Tim Watts, this linkage is now a reality.

The Kororoit Creek Trail under the Geelong freeway and incorporating the Historic Blue Stone bridge is opened.
Also recently opened is the Federation Trail from Fogarty Ave to Millers road and onto the Kororoit Creek Trail junction. This path has been widened and refurbished. Great outcomes from the West Gate Tunnel Projects.
Maribyrnong River Trail
The Maribyrnong River trail between Brimbank Park Keilor to Avondale Heights has been reopened. This trail has been closed for over two years. The Trail has been repaired and resurfaced, unfortunately some very poor gravel sections remain.
